چکیده

In the first half of the paper we construct a Morse-type theory on certain spaces of braid diagrams. We define a topological invariant of closed positive braids which is correlated with the existence of invariant sets of parabolic flows defined on discretized braid spaces. Parabolic flows, a type of one-dimensional lattice dynamics, evolve singular braid diagrams in such a way as to decrease their topological complexity; algebraic lengths decrease monotonically. This topological invariant is derived from aMorseConley homotopy index. In the second half of the paper we apply this technology to second order Lagrangians via a discrete formulation of the variational problem. This culminates in a very general forcing theorem for the existence of infinitely many braid classes of closed orbits.

Canonical Models of Filtered A∞-algebras and Morse Complexes

In the book [6], the authors studied the moduli spaces of bordered stable maps of genus 0 with Lagrangian boundary condition in a systematic way and constructed the filtered A∞-algebra associated to Lagrangian submanifolds. Since our construction depends on various auxiliary choices, we considered the canonical model of filtered A∞-algebras, which is unique up to filtered A∞-isomorphisms. The a...

Closed Characteristics of Fourth-order Twist Systems via Braids

For a large class of second order Lagrangian dynamics, one may reformulate the problem of finding periodic solutions as a problem in solving second-order recurrence relations satisfying a twist condition. We project periodic solutions of such discretized Lagrangian systems onto the space of closed braids and apply topological techniques. Under this reformulation, one obtains a gradient flow on ...

Braids and differential equations

Forcing theorems based on topological features of invariant sets have played a fundamental role in dynamics and differential equations. This talk focuses on the recent work of Vandervorst, Van den Berg, and the author using braids to construct a forcing theory for scalar parabolic PDEs, second-order Lagrangian ODEs, and one-dimensional lattice dynamics. Mathematics Subject Classification (2000)...

Floer Homology, Relative Braid Classes, and Low Dimensional Dynamics

Floer homology is a powerful variational technique used in Symplectic Geometry to derive a Morse type theory for the Hamiltonian action functional. In two and three dimensional dynamics the topological structures of braids and links can used to distinguish between various types of periodic orbits. Various classes of braids are introduced and Floer type invariants are defined. The definition and...

Braid classes and their Floer homology

Area-preserving diffeomorphisms of a 2-disc can be regarded as time-1 maps of (non-autonomous) Hamiltonian systems on S1×D2. In this 3-dimensional setting we can think of flow-lines of the Hamilton equations as closed braids in the solid torus S1×D2. In the spirit of positive braid classes and flat-knot types as used in [17] and [2] we define braid classes and use Floer’s variational approach [...
